DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An 83-year-old Des Moines woman was hospitalized after a home invader attacked her, police said Wednesday.

Police said Phyllis Tawney was headed to bed Tuesday night when she saw a man in her bathroom.

The intruder grabbed her cane and ripped off her life alert bracelet, breaking her arm, police said. He then tied her up with shoelaces and left her on the floor while he searched her house.

Tawney said the man was in the home for 15 minutes and stole jewelry.

The man tripped a home security alarm on the way out the back door. Police called in a K9 unit to try to track the man, but weren’t successful.

Tawney was still in the hospital Wednesday morning with a broken arm, but was listed in good condition.
