TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Pima County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a possible assault or robbery after finding a woman with life-threatening burns in a canal about 15 to 20 feet deep.

Authorities responded to a drainage canal near 37th Street and Palo Verde Road shortly before 12 p.m.

They found a woman with severe, life-threatening burns. Rural/Metro firefighters provided first aid while a technical team prepared to pull the woman out.

She was transported to University of Arizona Medical Center and later to the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center.

Detectives are investigating the incident as a robbery or assault, said Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Tom Peine. Homicide detectives were also on scene.

Authorities have not identified the woman or any suspects.
