ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The Arlington County Board has awarded a $26 million engineering and design contract for a streetcar between Fairfax and Arlington counties.

The board voted 3-2 late Tuesday to award the contract to Omaha, Nebraska-based HDR Engineering. HDR has worked on streetcar projects throughout the world, including in the District of Columbia.

Arlington officials say HDR will develop preliminary design plans for the entire 7.4-mile streetcar line. Most of the $333 million line will run in Arlington, connecting Pentagon City to the Skyline section of Fairfax County. The line also will reach Crystal City and Potomac Yard.

Preliminary engineering is expected to take 18 months.

The streetcar is set to open in 2020.
