ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a person after a hiker found the body in a river at a park in the Athens area.

Authorities say the body, which appears to be that of a woman, was found Tuesday afternoon in Ben Burton Park in western Athens-Clarke County.

Police Lt. David Leedahl tells The Athens Banner-Herald (https://bit.ly/1xe3JMA) that the body was partially submerged in the Middle Oconee River. Leedahl said the hiker found the body nearly a mile into the park, which is off Mitchell Bridge Road.

Detectives were treating the location as a possible crime scene as they tried to determine the cause of death.
