GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A former Port of Galveston police officer has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

The Galveston Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1v9b90f ) 38-year-old Jason Ener received the sentence on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to felony aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Police arrested Ener in February after an online sex sting in Montgomery County. He admitted to police that he had sex with the child up to five times over a period of several years.

Ener served as a patrol officer with the port police agency for about seven years. He was fired the day of his arrest.
