MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota has been picked first in the Big Ten hockey preseason poll by conference coaches.

The Big Ten announced the poll Wednesday at its media day in Detroit, the site of this season’s conference tournament. The Gophers won the inaugural Big Ten title and lost in the NCAA championship game.

Minnesota was followed in the predicted order of finish by Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State and Penn State.

The Gophers play their season opener Oct. 10 against Minnesota Duluth in the Ice Breaker Tournament hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Their home opener is Oct. 24 against Bemidji State, and their first Big Ten game is Dec. 5 at Michigan State.
