NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police say the gun used in a recent homicide in North Providence was stolen two years ago from a retired police captain’s home.

WPRI.com reports (https://bit.ly/ZKOBsc ) that police say the gun used in a deadly home invasion was issued by police and stolen from the East Greenwich home of a retired police captain in 2012.

Dari Garcia of Providence has been charged with murder, assault and other crimes in connection with a home invasion and fatally shooting 26-year-old Richard Catalano in August.

East Greenwich police say the department transferred the gun’s ownership from the town to the unidentified officer when he retired.

North Providence police say Garcia will be charged with possessing a stolen weapon, though it’s not clear who stole the weapon.

It wasn’t known Wednesday morning if Garcia is represented by a lawyer.
