NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) - Authorities in Newport say a homeless man was stabbed in the back of the neck by another transient staking out a state park gazebo as “his area.”

The Eugene Register-Guard (https://bit.ly/1uGR6F0 ) reports the 47-year-old victim was bleeding profusely Tuesday night when he staggered into a restaurant where off-duty officers who had been attending a conference were among the patrons and rendered aid.

The man underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

He told police he was drinking with another man at Fisherman’s Memorial Gazebo in Yaquina (yuh-KWIN’-uh) State Park. He said the other man claimed the gazebo and lashed out with a knife.

Police arrested 29-year-old Ty Owen Brown on attempted murder and other charges. They said he had a 6-inch knife. Brown told police the stabbing was in self-defense.
