GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Leflore County supervisors want a regional jail to locate at the former Delta Correctional Facility.

The formerly privately run jail closed in January 2012 and had previously housed as many as 1,300 inmates. A portion of the facility has been used as the county jail.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1B6AkBB ) high utility bills and mounting maintenance needs have led county officials to seek other tenants for the building.

Supervisors also cited the desire to attract additional jobs to the county. Delta Correctional Facility employed 241 people at the time of its closure.

The county has also been in discussions with Utah-based Management and Training Corp., a private prison operator, to turn over the facility to house federal inmates.

Supervisors will ask the Legislature to approve the regional jail.
