MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Police are investigating the shooting of an armed man by officers during a standoff in Memphis.

Police say officers came upon a woman who was hiding behind a vehicle in a Memphis neighborhood early Wednesday. Police said a man then fired a shot at officers, penetrating the windshield of an unmarked police vehicle.

Other officers responded, and they told the man to drop his weapon. Police said the man instead pointed the handgun at his own head, then at officers.

Officers fired shots, striking the man multiple times. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said the suspect had assaulted the woman, who is the mother of his child.

Five Memphis Police Department officers have been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
