ORIENTAL, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a woman has died after falling off a sailboat as it was moored in Pamlico County.

Multiple media outlets reported that 69-year-old Dorothea Bischoff fell off the boat around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday as it was docked in Oriental.

The Coast Guard said Bischoff and her husband were tying off the boat when she slipped into the water.

Neighbors said the couple had left about 8 a.m. to sail to Washington but had turned back because of rough seas. Bruce Perkins said he heard John Bischoff yelling that his wife was stuck under the hull and Perkins jumped into the water but she was tangled in a rope and he couldn’t get her out.

Pamlico EMS workers were unable to revive her.

North Carolina wildlife officers are investigating.
