COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Hundreds of family and friends gathered for a memorial service to remember a central Ohio Navy reservist who was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan last week.

Thirty-nine-year-old Stephen Byus of Reynoldsburg was killed Sept. 16 when a suicide bomber attacked a motorcade just outside a U.S. Special Operations base in Kabul.

He was honored at a memorial service Tuesday at a Columbus-area church. A funeral is scheduled for Sunday at his alma mater, Wellston High School in Jackson County.

The Columbus Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1r8oLd9 ) reports that Byus was a lieutenant junior grade with the Navy Reserve. In August, he voluntarily deployed to Afghanistan through his civilian job with the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime, part of the Defense Supply Center Columbus.
