DETROIT (AP) - Police say excessive speed may have caused a single-vehicle crash that killed four people on a Detroit freeway.

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw says Wednesday that the vehicle went off the roadway on Interstate 96 about 11 p.m. Tuesday and slammed into the base of a bridge on the eastbound lanes. The vehicle then caught fire.

Shaw says foul play is not suspected and that investigators believe “they were driving too fast.”

No witnesses have yet to come forward. The bodies were badly burned.

Wayne County medical examiner’s office spokeswoman Mary Mazur says the victims were three men and a young woman who appear to have been young adult to adult age. She says dental records are being sought to positively identify them.
