SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police have identified the 20-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a car as she was crossing a street in South Burlington.

Police said Julia Gorda, who was from Romania, died Monday night as she was crossing north to south on Wilson Road from the Sheraton Hotel, in the direction of Staples Plaza.

The driver was 61-year-old Mitchell Stern of Essex Junction. Police said stopped and called 911.

Charlie Handy, who owns Handy’s Service Center in town, tells WCAX-TV (https://bit.ly/1r8D3KG) Gorda was on a work visa as part of an exchange program. She worked part time at a fast-food restaurant and at a gas station owned by the Handy family.

Detective Ron Bliss said the traffic light was green and Gorda did not have the walk signal.
