GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) - A Goose Creek man is dead following an exchange of fire with police officers.

Area media outlets report that police responded to a domestic dispute call at a home shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities say the victim’s wife and daughter left the home before an exchange of gunfire with a man inside.

There was another exchange of gunfire shortly before midnight. Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury says that 57-year-old Brian Eugene Rice of Goose Creek was wounded. Salisbury says Rice died early Wednesday at a hospital.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.

During the standoff police closed a lane of U.S. 52 and stopped train traffic through the area.
