MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Corrections Department says it has received a $1 million federal grant to help reduce the number of people who are returned to prison after committing additional crimes.

The department says Vermont is one of five states that have received the grants under The Second Chance Act.

Vermont and the other states will be eligible to receive up to $2 million in additional funding over the next two years.

Second Chance Act Programs are designed to help offenders re-enter society after leaving prison and reduce recidivism.

Vermont will use the money to, among other things, identify people most likely to commit more crimes, balance sanctions and treatment and target high-crime and high-recidivism areas.
