CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A former employee of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for mail fraud.

Forty-four-year old Cheryl Gray of Hilltop was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Charleston.

Federal prosecutors say Gray’s job was to collect application fees for concealed weapon permits, record the fees paid, and transmit to State Police a list of permits issued each month.

For six months Gray kept cash payments for the permits and created a false set of applicant lists.

The fraud resulted in losses of about $40,000.
