ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A central New York police sergeant has admitted in federal court that he assaulted a handcuffed man at the police station and filed a false report to cover it up.

Federal authorities say 47-year-old Joseph Arigo pleaded guilty to one felony count of depriving the man of his right not to be subjected to excessive force.

Under a plea agreement, Arigo admitted slamming the man’s head on a bench and punching him several times at the Fulton Police Station.

The man later passed out and required medical treatment. Federal authorities say the man had been yelling but wasn’t threatening to police officers.

Arigo, released after pleading guilty, could face up to 10 years in prison at sentencing Jan. 23.
