LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - State forest rangers have declared a forest fire on a small Adirondack mountain “contained,” although they plan to continue efforts to fully extinguish it.

The fire, visible from the Adirondack Northway between exits 20 and 21, burned about two acres on French Mountain near Lake George. It was first spotted Wednesday afternoon and was considered contained by late Thursday.

Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman David Winchell says 11 forest rangers were on the mountain Thursday and planned to return on Friday. Lake George firefighters assisted by providing water.

Winchell said a campfire was determined to be the cause.

The fire danger in the region has increased because of a dry spell in recent weeks.
