Illegal immigrants appear to be hijacking the phrase “coming out” to describe their experience of publicly acknowledging their immigration status.

“Coming out” is typically used by lesbians, gay men and bisexuals to describe how they opened up to their family and friends about their sexual orientation.

But members of United We Dream and the Minority Affairs Council adopted the phrase for its “Coming Out Day” Wednesday afternoon in Edinburg, Texas, where parents announced their illegal status and demanded protection from President Obama, the Washington Examiner reported.

“We are here, because three weeks ago Obama asked us to wait until after elections to give us an announcement on expansion of deferred action,” United We Dream organizer Maria Fernanda Cabello told a local Fox affiliate. “I don’t think that’s fair, because I have DACA, I have deferred action, but my mom and my dad are still undocumented.

“Our families are coming out for the first time saying that they’re undocumented, that they’re unafraid, and demanding that Obama expand the same deferred action that he gave to Dreamers like me to our parents,” she said.
