MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Spanish striker David Villa will arrive in Australia only days before the A-League kicks off but is expected to play for Melbourne City against Sydney FC in the tournament’s opening round.

Villa is set to attend the league’s season launch in Melbourne next Tuesday and will make his first appearance in City’s away game against Sydney on Oct. 11.

In a statement Tuesday, Villa said “from what I have heard, my arrival has generated a lot of high expectations for the club and I hope that I can meet them.”

The 32-year-old Villa is joining Melbourne City on a short-term loan from New York City and is slated to play 10 A-League matches.
