ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) - State police have destroyed a live mortar round and hand grenade found in the Rochester Hills home of a recently deceased World War II veteran.

Oakland County sheriff’s officials tell MLive.com (https://bit.ly/1xueY3E ) for a story Monday that the mortar was an armor piercing anti-tank round. The hand grenade had its firing mechanism intact, but the explosive powder had been removed.

The veteran’s nephew found the mortar and grenade Saturday while cleaning out the man’s home, north of Detroit.
