PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The trial of a New York City man charged with killing his girlfriend and leaving her body in an SUV in a motel parking lot in Portland is underway.

Prosecutors say Anthony Pratt Jr. shot 29-year-old Margarita Fisenko Scott of Westbrook inside a Portland apartment in November 2012. But a defense attorney said Monday that police were “too hasty and close-minded.”

Scott’s body was found in January 2013.

The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/Zk6JsO ) said the defense contends DNA evidence points to someone other than the 21-year-old defendant. Prosecutors say Pratt’s DNA was found on chewing gun used to plug a bullet hole in the victim’s apartment. But the defense said DNA evidence suggested others had handled the weapon and that someone else had sex with the victim before she died.
