NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - New Castle County Police are warning residents of a phone scam in which callers claim to represent federal agencies and demand immediate payment of fictitious back taxes.

Officers say about 50 residents complained to the department over the weekend about calls from someone claiming to be from the IRS or the Department of Treasury. Police say the callers tell them they owe back taxes and will be arrested if they don’t pay them immediately.

Police say the callers are told to buy a pre-paid credit card and send it to the caller to pay off the fictitious debt.
