LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man in Clark County has been diagnosed with West Nile virus in what marks the first human case of the illness so far this year in southern Nevada.

Officials with the Southern Nevada Health District say a man over the age of 50 is suffering from the more serious, neuroinvasive form of West Nile.

The news comes a month after the district reported finding mosquitoes carrying West Nile in several southern Nevada ZIP codes.

The health district learned of nine West Nile cases in southern Nevada last year, including two patients who died of the disease.

Health officials recommend wearing bug repellant and getting rid of standing water that can turn into a mosquito breeding ground.
