PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed September as Honey Month in South Dakota.

South Dakota ranks among the top five honey producing states with 225 beekeepers who maintain 324,000 colonies.

The soil, topography and weather during the summer have led South Dakota to cash in on the honey business. The state’s Department of Agriculture says more than 14 million pounds of honey were produced in South Dakota last year with a value of over $30 million.
