BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A former bookkeeper convicted of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from a golf course in Dorset, Vermont, where she worked will serve six months in federal prison.

Sixty-two-year-old Diane Schmaler of Cossayuna, New York, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in May.

Court records say Schmaler had been employed as the manager of finance and administration at the Dorset Field Club, paying the club’s bills, handling payroll and maintaining the general ledger.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1lxWo65 ) that she is believed to have stolen between $70,000 and $120,000. She worked at the club from 1985-2013.

The U.S. attorney’s office says she embezzled the money mainly by issuing checks to herself without authorization. An upcoming restitution hearing will determine how much she must pay back.
