DE BEQUE, Colo. (AP) - Interstate 70 has reopened in De Beque (dih-BEK’) Canyon east of Grand Junction after a bomb squad investigated a suspicious item found on a highway bridge.

Mesa County authorities said the interstate reopened shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday. It had been closed since 11:30 a.m., backing up traffic as drivers were rerouted onto detours.

After bomb squad members examined the item, they said it appeared to be equipment used in the energy industry. They didn’t elaborate.

A cleanup crew spotted the item on an I-70 bridge over the Colorado River and notified the Colorado State Patrol. Troopers requested the freeway be shut down for the investigation.
