FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Fewer students are enrolling in Fairbanks public schools for the second straight year.

The official count last October showed a reduction of 214 students from the previous year.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (https://bit.ly/1uAB4Nl) reports the unofficial count Tuesday showed a decrease of 295 students, down to 13,741.

District Chief Financial Officer Mike Fisher says the decrease of around 300 fewer students may be optimistic. He says the official count in October could be a loss of up to 400 students.

The loss is significant for school finances.

Much of the state money the district receives is allocated on a per-student basis.
