LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - The Lewiston City Council has voted to place a measure on the November ballot to legalize recreational use of marijuana.

The council voted unanimously Tuesday night to let voters decide whether it should be legal for people 21 and older to possess up to one ounce of pot.

Citizens for a Safer Maine had submitted a petition with more than 1,250 signatures to get the measure in front of the council, which had the option of adopting it or placing it on the ballot. A total of 859 valid signatures were required.

A similar measure will appear on the November ballot in South Portland.

Marijuana activists also have submitted a petition to place a measure on the ballot in York.
