SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Southaven residents will have to start paying $12 a month for garbage pickup, but their property taxes will not increase in the coming year.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1sYuzml ) that the city’s Board of Aldermen on Tuesday adopted a $67.8 million budget for the year that begins Oct. 1.

Mayor Darren Musselwhite told residents that city leaders opted for a monthly garbage fee because state law limits the level of property taxes that can be used to pay for trash pickup. The city’s monthly garbage cost is $2.4 million, but under the tax limit, the city would only collect $1.8 million.

Musselwhite says the $12 monthly residential garbage fee was a way to cover expenses and maintain a necessary service.
