SEATTLE (AP) - Heavy showers and thunderstorms rolled through much of northwest Washington on Tuesday evening, carrying rain, wind and lightning.

A spokesman for Seattle Public Utilities said crews were responding to dozens of reports of urban flooding and sewage backups.

A Seattle City Light spokesman says winds that blew trees onto power lines temporarily knocked out electricity to nearly 10,000 customers. Power outages also were reported in several suburban Seattle communities.

KOMO-TV reports that the principal of Fairview Christian School in Seattle says the school will be closed Wednesday due to flooding.

Lightning strikes were reported in Island and Skagit counties.
