WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Police say a crash involving four vehicles has closed both directions of Interstate 35 in West Des Moines, just south of the Highway 5 bridge.

West Des Moines police say the crashed happened about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday when the driver of a northbound truck hauling a trailer lost control, causing it to break through a barrier separating the freeway’s northbound and southbound lanes.

The truck hit another truck traveling in the opposite direction, and two passenger vehicles then hit the second truck.

Three people were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth person declined medical attention.

Traffic was being rerouted and police say it could be several hours before the freeway reopens.
