NEWFANE, N.Y. (AP) - Police are trying to determine why two cars collided on a rural western New York road, killing the women driving the vehicles.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office tells local media that the cars collided head-on around 7:15 a.m. Monday in the town of Newfane, on Lake Ontario 30 miles northeast of Buffalo.

Deputies say a car driven by 50-year-old Georgia Vaughn of Olcott crossed over the center lane and struck an oncoming car driven by 51-year-old Barbara Barnes of Newfane.

Vaughn was pronounced dead at the scene. Barnes was taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital in Newfane, where she was pronounced dead.

A dog in Vaughn’s car also was killed.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
