MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - A man is charged with beating and raping a University of Montana student at her off-campus residence.

The woman told Missoula police that 20-year-old Zachary Brennen Newbary beat and kicked her, put his hands over her mouth to stop her from breathing and sexually assaulted her. She said she escaped once, but that Newbary jumped out a window and dragged her back into her residence.

Court records say the woman had bruises on her face, neck and arms and a chipped tooth.

Newbary was arrested Saturday morning. He made an initial court appearance Monday on charges of aggravated assault, sexual intercourse without consent and partner or family member assault. Justice of the Peace Amy Blixt ordered him held on $100,000 bail and set an Oct. 15 preliminary hearing in District Court.
