MALDEN, Mass. (AP) - A Rhode Island man charged with stealing the cash box from a group of Cub Scouts selling popcorn outside a Massachusetts supermarket reportedly yelled “Times are hard!” as he bolted from the scene.

Kenneth Paul Smith Jr. of Glocester, Rhode Island, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on a larceny charge. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.

Police say Smith grabbed the cash from a Scout’s mother on Sunday outside the Malden Stop & Shop and fled on foot.

A witness managed to snap a few cellphone photos as he ran away yelling “Times are hard!”

Police arrested him on Monday when officers recognized him waiting at the Malden MBTA station.

The $238 stolen was not recovered, but the supermarket donated $150 and other customers have pitched in.
