MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Cobb County prosecutors say a man has pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a man who tried intervening during a fight with his girlfriend.

District Attorney’s spokeswoman Kim Isaza says 26-year-old Charles Renard Mahaffey admitted to stabbing 26-year-old Christopher Reynolds Nov. 25 and pleaded guilty Tuesday just as his trial was set to begin.

Isaza says Mahaffey pleaded guilty to felony murder and aggravated assault. Authorities say Reynolds was unarmed and was stabbed with a hunting knife once in his abdomen and once in his throat.

Prosecutors say Mahaffey initially told investigators that a stranger attacked Reynolds but later said he stabbed Reynolds in self-defense when authorities presented witness statements.

Mahaffey has been sentenced to life in prison and must serve 30 years before being eligible for parole.
