LOS ANGELES (AP) - A mistrial has been declared in the case of a Los Angeles firefighter accused of beating a woman last year in a neighborhood dispute over the feeding of stray cats.

City News Service reports the jury told the judge Tuesday that it was deadlocked on the felony battery and assault charges filed against 38-year-old Ian Justin Eulian. Jurors also said they never voted on a lesser charge against his mother.

The case stemmed from a September 2013 altercation arising from a dispute over a neighbor’s habit of feeding stray cats.

The prosecution did not immediately say whether the case will be retried. A hearing is set for Oct. 30.
