KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) - Dole Food chairman David Murdock says he will donate $15 million a year to the North Carolina Research Campus research facility.

Area media outlets reported Murdock said on Tuesday the annual commitment will solidify future operations of the David H. Murdock Research Institute, a nonprofit organization serving as the core laboratory facility at the Kannapolis campus. He said the annual grant will be made in perpetuity.

Murdock said the gift aimed at recruiting top talent and seeding more projects, moves he hopes will lead to full use of the building.

An official at the research campus said Murdock’s gift more than doubles the institute’s annual budget.

Murdock has invested at least $600 million in the development of the campus, which was built on the site of the former Pillowtex mill.
