ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis County police officer is hospitalized and a suspect was treated for injuries after a confrontation in which the suspect was shot in the leg.

The incident happened about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday outside a Kmart store. Police say the suspect was treated and released for a bullet graze wound to the leg. Police have not disclosed details of the officer’s injury but say it is not considered life-threatening.

Store security contacted police when the man arrived, recognizing him from previous thefts. Police say the man tried to steal jewelry worth up to $40,000.

Officers surrounded the man’s SUV in the parking lot. The suspect was shot while both he and the officer were inside the SUV.

Police tried to use a stun gun but say it didn’t work.
