WHITEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Detectives in Columbus County are investigating the discovery of a body in a Whiteville creek.

Local media outlets report the body of a man was found by N.C. Department of Transportation workers on Monday under a bridge about a mile south of the Bladen County line.

Columbus County Sheriff’s Maj. Bobby Worley said the cause of death hasn’t been determined. Worley said there was no identification found on the man’s body.

Assistant Coroner William Hannah says the man appeared to be in his 50s or 60s. Hannah, who said body has been sent to Raleigh for an autopsy, said there were no people reported missing in the area.
