PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Two Rhode Island police departments will get federal funding to hire more officers.

The state’s congressional delegation said Tuesday the Warwick Police Department will receive $500,000 to hire four officers and the Woonsocket Police Department will receive $125,000 to hire one officer.

The grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice to put more police officers on patrol, reduce crime and help cities fill budget gaps.

The grants can be used to pay entry-level salaries and benefits for new, full-time officers, or to rehire officers who have been laid off or are scheduled to be laid off due to local budget cuts.
