BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore police officer who was on duty and in uniform terrorized his wife and her boyfriend by ripping the front door to the boyfriend’s home off its hinges, kicking and punching his wife and pointing his service weapon at both of them, the department said Tuesday.

After Monday morning’s incident, Officer Gualberto Diaz returned to work and asked to be excused for the rest of his shift, but did not report the incident, department spokeswoman Sgt. Sarah Connolly said in a news release. He was arrested Tuesday without incident, she said.

Diaz, 35, was charged with assault, burglary, multiple firearm offenses and destruction of property. Connolly said he is being held without bail and has been suspended without pay.

Online court records do not list a lawyer for Diaz, a 6-year veteran of the department.

According to charging documents, after breaking into the boyfriend’s home, Diaz pulled his wife out of bed by her hair and kicked and punched her. She sustained bruises to her forehead and lip, and a black eye, the documents said.

When Diaz pointed his service weapon at his wife and her boyfriend, the documents said, the boyfriend jumped through a second-floor glass window, suffering several “substantial” lacerations, and ran to a neighbor’s home for help.

Witnesses told investigating officers that Diaz was driving a marked patrol vehicle that was parked outside the home.

Connolly said both victims went to local hospitals, where they were treated and released.

Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez said in a prepared statement: “The Baltimore Police Department has no tolerance for officers who break the law, for officers who inflict harm on their community and family. … There is no excuse for this type of behavior and senseless act violence.”
