VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) - Local airwaves in Valley City are running ads in which the fire department is calling for volunteers.

WDAY-TV (https://bit.ly/1uaLBkh ) reports the department is in desperate need of volunteer help.

Fire Chief Gary Retterath tells the station that people sometimes don’t want to commit because of their families, children and jobs. He says volunteers have to work harder when there is less personnel. He adds that it also takes more time to get the job done.

The station averages two calls per week and among the incidents they respond to are structural and grass fires, river rescues and severe floods.

Retterath says he hopes to bring the number of volunteers to at least 40.
