BYU (1-0) at Texas (1-0), 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday (Fox Sports 1)

Line: Texas by 1

Series record: BYU leads 3-1

This is a major test for new Texas coach Charlie Strong both as motivator and game coach. Texas has to forge offense behind new QB Tyrone Swoopes with starter David Ash once again sidelined with concussion symptoms. If Strong can push Texas to win over team that embarrassed Longhorns last season, he can start to build momentum for entire season. For BYU, which plays an independent schedule, another win over a program like Texas would be a big national statement for the Cougars and quarterback Taysom Hill.

Hill vs. Texas defensive ends Cedric Reed and Shiro Davis. Hill used zone read option to burn Texas for 259 of BYU’s school-record 550 yards rushing against Longhorns last season. Former Texas coach Mack Brown fired defensive coordinator Manny Diaz the next day.

BYU: The Cougars start two freshmen on offensive line in C Tejan Koroma and LT Ului Lapuaho. They’ll have hands full against stout Texas defensive line that punished North Texas last week. If Texas DTs Desmond Jackson and Malcom Brown can push into BYU backfield, Hill’s option reads may never get started.

Texas: Swoopes was once regarded as the future, but seemed to regress into a project. He hardly played last season and looked shaky in spring game. He also has to do it with three starters on the offense line out because of injuries and suspensions. If the offense struggles, Strong may turn to true freshman Jerrod Heard.
