EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a homeowner and two police officers were injured in a Long Island fire that killed three dogs.

The fire broke out at the East Northport house on Barnett Place around 2:40 p.m. Thursday.

Suffolk police say the homeowner tried to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose. She was taken to a hospital with serious burns.

Newsday ( ) says when firefighters arrived they found five dogs outside and flames engulfing the rear of the house.

Two officers attempted to find the trapped dogs inside but were beat back by heavy smoke and heat.

They were treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital.

The three dogs were later found dead inside the house. The other dogs were taken to an animal shelter.

The blaze was not deemed suspicious.
