HONOLULU (AP) - The attorney for a 53-year-old school custodian charged with sexually assaulting a student is vigorously denying that his client committed a crime.

Defense attorney Victor Bakke says James Holt is devastated by the accusation that he assaulted a male student at Kanoelani Elementary School in Waipio. He says the allegation came “out of the blue.”

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (https://bit.ly/1qtL4bI) reports Holt has been a Department of Education employee since 2000. He was arrested Aug. 27.

He is charged with third-degree sexual assault, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. He is free on $50,000 bail.

Kanoelani Elementary principal Stacie Kunihisa sent a letter to parents Tuesday and said the school initiated a criminal investigation into an alleged sexual assault.

Kunihisa’s letter said police were immediately notified.
