GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say they have found the body of a former Grand Junction fire chief who jumped into the Gunnison River without a life jacket.

The Daily Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1qpRAQP ) reported Saturday that Mesa County Search and Rescue workers found the body of 59-year-old Rick Beaty late Friday near where they had been searching for several days.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office says Beaty jumped into the river near Whitewater on Tuesday while on a float trip with friends. Authorities do not suspect foul play in his death. The county coroner likely will release details about his death in upcoming days.

Beaty served as chief of the Grand Junction Fire Department from 1995 until he resigned in 2006. City Manager Rich Englehart says he played a large role in developing the organization.
