CHICAGO (AP) - Bicycling Magazine has named Chicago the second best city in the United States to ride a bike.

In a news release, Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the magazine’s decision to bump Chicago up to second place from its 5th place position two years ago is in part the result of improvements and planned improvements to the biking experience in the city.

The release says the magazine pointed to things like the planned addition of 100 miles of protected lanes by next year, the construction of the Navy Pier flyover that includes an elevated path for cyclists and pedestrians and the success of the bike share system called Divvy.

The top-ranked city for bicycling is New York. Rounding out the top five are Minneapolis, Portland, Oregon and Washington, D.C.
