MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - The city of Meridian is selling some timber near the Lakeview Golf Course to get better access to a dirt pit.

Public Works Director Hugh Smith tells The Meridian Star (https://bit.ly/1vRVPHV ) timber is being cut on about 25 acres - 10 of those acres include the dirt pit.

Smith says the timber is all mature and had reached its life cycle.

Smith says when selling commercial timber, the bigger the tract the more bids the city would receive for the property

He says the dirt is needed for construction projects throughout the city and Lauderdale County.

Smith says the city could have continued to use dirt out of the pit and destroyed timber in the process. He says selling it was a better idea.
